Rules & Regulations of the 14th Lagny International Piano Competition

 

1. General points

The 14th Lagny-sur-Marne International Piano Competition will take place in City Hall's honorary event room, from April 21st to 26th 2020 included.

 

The Competition is open to pianists of all countries complying with the rules regarding age of the various divisions:

  • Junior Division: candidates born after April 1st 2003

  • Young Division: candidates born after April 1st 1998

  • Major Division: candidates born after April 1st 1987

 

Participation to the Competition constitutes acceptance by the contestant of all rules and regulations. The original French version of these rules governs all interpretations.

 

By applying, candidates abide by all rules and regulations, commit to comply with instructions from the board of the competition at all times, and strictly abide by the conditions of use of the venues made available to them, and all safety regulations specifically. This commitment also applies to any potential accompanying party.

 

Minor contestants will remain under full responsibility of their legal representative for the entirety of their presence at the Competition.

2. Application

Application to the competition must be made online at www.concourspianolagny.com

No other way of applying will be accepted.

 

Applications must be submitted by Feb. 19th, 2020 at 23:59 (Paris time). Past this deadline, the online application form will no longer be available. 

 

Participation in the competition is conditional upon a candidate :

  • Choosing an application division conform to the age limits. One candidate can only apply to one division.

  • Completing all required information.

  • Submitting all required attachments in accordance with the chosen division.

  • Providing an internet link to one or several video recordings of the candidate. The video's repertory is of the choice of the contestant and can be different from the works performed at the competition. Duration of the videos is free.

  • Making the online payment of the application fee. Its amount is dependent upon the chosen division :

    • Major : 150 €

    • Young : 120 €

    • Junior : 100 €

3. Selection of the constestants

Once the form is complete and the payment made, the candidate will receive an acknowledgement of receipt by email. If the candidates does not receive the acknowledgement of receipt within a reasonable timeframe (from a few seconds to an hour, depending on the internet provider) and after making sure it is not blocked by a spam filter, the candidate should give notice of the issue to the administration of the competition by email (concourspianolagny@gmail.com)

Each application is subject to review by Competition officials who rule on its acceptance after a maximum of one week after registration on the competition website:

  • If the application is approved, the enrollment is definitively accepted. The candidate then receives a confirmation by email.

  • If the application is declined, paid application fees will be refunded within one week on the candidate's issuing bank account.

Applications will be reviewed in order of registration on the competition website.

The decision of the board to approve or decline an application is final and not subject to questions, revisions, or appeal.

 

Besides, applications in each division may be closed at any given time if the number of approved candidates has reached the maximum capacity:

  • 30 contestants in Junior Division

  • 30 contestants in Young Division

  • 55 contestants in Major Division

However, the competition board reserves the right to modify the maximum capacity according to the extent of the applications.

Applications will be counted according to the order of registration on the competition website. 

Once informed of his/her admission to compete by email, the candidate cannot claim any reimbursement of the registration fees if he cancels his participation in the competition. The candidate admitted to compete must confirm his final participation by return email.

The candidate who has been informed of his preselection to the competition must confirm his participation by email before March 5, 2020 at midnight (Paris time). If he/she does not answer before this deadline, his/her participation will be canceled, without him/her being able to claim any compensation or reimbursement of his registration fees.

 

A letter of invitation may be provided to successful applicants in need of a visa.

4. Repertoire

All works are to be performed from memory with the following exception: works composed after 1950 may be performed with the score. The Competition does not provide any page turner.

Contestants are free to play or not repetitions in the pieces, as long as their program does not exceed in length the time allocated to each round in the different divisions. The jury reserves the right to interrupt a contestant if his/her program exceeds the allocated time. The program indicated by the candidate at the time of application may be modified until January 10, 2019 at 8 pm subject to acceptance by the competition Direction. The modification request must be made on the contest website using the specific form.

Major Division

In this division, the competition consists of two rounds: the first round and the final round.

First round

The contestant will perform a program (10 to 15 minutes) including

  1. A first movement of a classical sonata (contestant's choice)

  2. A study (contestant's choice)

  3. One or several works (contestant's choice)

At the end of the first round, the jury will select 6 contestants for the final round.

Final round

The contestant will perform a program of his/her choice (25 to 30 minutes).

The contestant cannot perform the same works he or she played during the first round.

Young Division

In this division, the competition is made of one single round.

The contestant will perform a program (15 to 20 minutes) including

  1. A piece or a movement of piece of the classic or romantic period (contestant's choice)

  2. A Study (contestant's choice)

  3. One or several works (contestant's choice)

Junior Division

In this division, the competition is made of one single round.

The contestant will perform a program (10 to 15 minutes) including

  1. A piece or a movement of piece of the classic or romantic period (contestant's choice)

  2. A Study (contestant's choice)

  3. One or several works (contestant's choice)

 

5. Prizes

 

 Major Division

  • 1st Prize. 3000 euros. Three solo recitals.

  • 2nd Prize. 1000 euros. Participation to the laureates' concert

  • 3rd Prize. 500 euros. Participation to the laureates' concert

  • 4th Prize.

  • 5th Prize.

  • 6th Prize.

  • Prize of the City of Lagny-sur-Marne. 1000 euros.

  • Public Choice Prize. 500 euros.

  • One scolarship at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris Alfred Cortot (full academic year). The scholarship is subject to the following conditions: candidate under the age of 27, having never studied at ENM Paris before, being interested and able to effectively follow this year of course; the scholarship is valid for the 2019-2020 school year.

Young Division

  • 1st Prize. 500 euros. Participation to the laureates' concert. A free masterclass at one the Académies d'Été du Grand Paris 2020.

  • 2nd Prize. Participation to the laureates' concert

  • 3rd Prize. Participation to the laureates' concert

  • 1st honorable mention.

  • 2nd honorable mention.

 

Junior Division

  • 1st Prize. 300 euros. Participation to the laureates' concert. A free masterclass at one the Académies d'Été du Grand Paris 2020.

  • 2nd Prize. Participation to the laureates' concert

  • 3rd Prize. Participation to the laureates' concert

  • 1st honorable mention.

  • 2nd honorable mention.

 

6. Proceedings of the Competition

Major Division

 

Arrival of the contestants: April, Wednesday 22, 2020

Contestants must present themselves at the reception of City Hall (Hôtel de Ville) of Lagny-sur-Marne (2, place de l'Hôtel de Ville) with an identity card or passport in order to register their arrival, on April Wednesday 22, 2020 from 14:30 to 18:30.

A draw determining the running order of contestants will take place in their presence on April Wednesday 22, 2020 at 19:30 in the honorary event room of City Hall. The schedule of the first round will be communicated to the contestants on April Wednesday 22, 2020 around 21:00 and posted up at the entrance of the honorary event room of City Hall.

Piano trial: April, Thursday 23, 2020

Contestants will be allowed to briefly try the piano of the competition on April, Thursday 23, 2020, according to a specific schedule which will be made available to them by email in March 2020. This schedule will not be subject to modifications.

First round: April Friday 24 and Saturday 25, 2020

The first round will take place on April Friday 24 and Saturday 25, 2020 according to the schedule posted up on April Wednesday 22, 2020  around 21:00. This schedule will not be subject to modifications.

At the end of the first round, the jury will announce the 6 remaining finalists and the schedule of the finale round.

During the first round, a warm-up time of 20 minutes is planned for each contestant before his/her performance, on a rehearsal piano located in City Hall.

 

Final round: April, Sunday 26, 2020

The final round will take place on April, Sunday 26, 2020 from 10:00.

At the end of the final round, the jury will announce the prize list of the competition.

All finalists will play on the laureates' concert, April, Sunday 26 2020 at 17:30 at the City Hall.

During the final round, a warm-up time of 40 minutes is planned for each contestant before his/her performance, on a rehearsal piano located in City Hall.

Minor contestants will remain under full responsibility of their legal representative.

Young Division

April, Tuesday 21, 2020

The running order will be communicated to the contestants by email in March 2020 and displayed on the competition website.

Contestants must present themselves at the reception of City Hall (Hôtel de Ville) of Lagny-sur-Marne (2, place de l'Hôtel de Ville) with an identity card or passport, one hour prior to their appearance on stage at the latest.

The jury will announce the prize list of the Young Division at the end of the round.

A warm-up time of 20 minutes is planned for each contestant before his/her performance, on a rehearsal piano located in City Hall.

Under 18 candidates will remain under full responsibility of their legal representative.

Junior Division

April, Wednesday 22, 2020

The running order will be communicated to the contestants by email in March 2020 and displayed on the competition website.

Contestants must present themselves at the reception of City Hall (Hôtel de Ville) of Lagny-sur-Marne (2, place de l'Hôtel de Ville) with an identity card or passport, one hour prior to their appearance on stage at the latest.

The jury will announce the prize list of the Young Division at the end of the round.

A warm-up time of 15 minutes is planned for each contestant before his/her performance, on a rehearsal piano located in City Hall.

Contestants will remain under full responsibility of their legal representative.

 

7. Accommodation

Travel and accommodation are at the candidates's expense.

However, for candidates of the Major Division who reached the age of 18 years old on April 22 2020, a free accommodation solution in a host family is possible by making the request on the application (subject to availability).

All host families own a piano.

8. Recordings

Public rounds of the Competition may be broadcasted live or pre-recorded by the radio, television or on the internet. They may also be recorded in order to conduct editions on various supports (CD, DVD, etc). Contestants transfer the right to fix, reproduce, and make a third party reproduce their performances on any support as well as to broadcast them by any means worldwide. This transfer is valid for a duration of 50 years from the date of the performances.
